SEO vs. GEO vs. AEO vs. AIO: Differences and When to Use Each

SEO ranks in search results; AEO optimizes for direct answers; AIO targets Google AI Overviews; GEO seeks citations in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. They aren’t alternatives: they’re layers of the same system, and the right implementation order matters.

Mexico’s digital visibility market has filled up with acronyms—SEO, GEO, AEO, AIO—and agencies selling them as separate products. They’re layers of the same system, and confusing them can mean paying twice for the same thing or leaving gaps exactly where your customer asks a question. This framework puts them in order.

SEORankings in Google/Bing resultsRankings, organic traffic3-6 months
AEODirect answers: featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistantsShare of answers, snippet CTR2-4 months

# Why is SEO still the foundation?

Generative engines read the web that Google has already organized: AI Overviews cite well-ranked results, Perplexity retrieves indexed pages, and ChatGPT browses with a search engine behind it. A site without a solid technical SEO foundation—one that’s indexable and fast, with correct canonicals and schema—is invisible to AI systems too. That’s why the right implementation order is: first the technical foundation, then citable content (AEO), then entity signals and external authority (GEO/AIO).

# What changes in practice between AEO and GEO?

AEO optimizes pages so a system can extract the answer: question-and-answer format, definitions in the opening paragraphs, FAQPage schema, and data with figures. GEO goes beyond your site: it works on your entire entity—who you are according to all the sources the model consulted—so the engine recommends you even when the user doesn’t visit any page. With AEO, you compete for a snippet; with GEO, you compete for the model’s trust.

# When should you prioritize each layer?

  • If your site isn’t being indexed properly or has technical errors: SEO first. Everything else depends on it.
  • If you already rank but direct answers cite others: AEO—reformat content into a question-and-answer format with citable data.
  • If Google already shows AI Overviews for your commercial searches and you don’t appear as a source: AIO—topical authority and extractable formatting.
  • If your customers ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for recommendations in your category: GEO—entity, external sources, and citation monitoring. In B2B, healthcare, legal, and education, this is no longer optional.
