LEGAL · CLAUDE FOR LEGAL PRACTICE

Claude Legal for law offices, firms, and government

Implementing Claude in legal practice: case law research, legal drafting, due diligence, and case file analysis—with attorney-client privilege.

What you get

The result the client can interact with, not the stack underneath.

An attorney spends 60-70% of their time on research, drafting repetitive pleadings, and document review—work that applies legal judgment to tasks that are fundamentally repeatable. Claude Opus and Sonnet, with a 200K-token context window, can read complete case files, compare them against case law, draft first versions of pleadings, and summarize testimony without losing context. ia¹ implements Claude at the law firm while ensuring attorney-client privilege is respected: Claude Enterprise does not train on your data, matters are segregated, usage policies are documented, and training is ongoing. Attorneys stop drafting first versions and start editing, approving, and litigating.

What exactly it is

Technical definition—for Google, ChatGPT, and your CTO.

Implementing artificial intelligence at law firms and legal practices requires specific considerations: attorney-client privilege, ethical confidentiality, regulatory compliance (in Mexico, LFPDPPP; in the U.S., HIPAA when applicable; ABA Model Rule 1.6 on confidentiality), and traceability for every use. Claude (Anthropic) is one of the few LLMs suited to legal use because of its policy against training on Enterprise data, its extended 200K-token context window (equivalent to case files spanning several thousand pages), and its legal reasoning capabilities demonstrated in evaluations such as LegalBench. Documented use cases include case law research, due diligence, drafting pleadings, contracts, complaints, and legal arguments, analyzing testimony, reviewing case files, and responding to inquiries in corporate legal departments.

Frequently asked questions

What we’re asked most often.

Is it safe to use Claude at a law firm without violating attorney-client privilege?
Yes, with Claude Enterprise configured correctly. Anthropic is contractually prohibited from training models on Enterprise customer data—the firm’s information is not included in the training set. To properly maintain attorney-client privilege, configure matter-level segregation (each case in its own workspace), internally documented and signed usage policies, audit logs by user and matter, and specific clauses in the client engagement letter. ABA Model Rule 1.6 and Mexico’s LFPDPPP permit the use of AI as long as these measures are implemented and documented.
What legal tasks is Claude useful for, and what should it not be used for?
It works especially well for initial case law research, drafting first drafts of pleadings and contracts, due diligence across hundreds of documents, analyzing lengthy testimony, large-scale document review in discovery, and summarizing case files. It should NOT be used as the final authority for binding legal opinions without human review, citing case law without manual verification (models hallucinate citations), or drafting complaints/final arguments without editing by the responsible attorney. Rule of thumb: AI speeds up the draft; the attorney signs it.
How much does Claude Opus reduce the time needed for case law research and due diligence?
Case law research: from 8-15 hours to 1-3 hours for a typical case, with the case law manually validated at the end. Due diligence on 200-500 documents: from 40-80 hours to 6-15 hours with automated extraction of critical clauses and risk flags. Analysis of lengthy testimony (3+ hours of recordings): from 6 hours to 45 minutes with a structured summary. Actual savings depend on the rigor of subsequent human verification—at ia¹, we recommend always allocating 20-30% of the time saved to cross-checking.
Does my law firm need to migrate from NetDocuments or iManage to use Claude?
No. Claude integrates with NetDocuments, iManage, Box, SharePoint, and internal systems via API or standard connectors—the firm keeps its current DMS and adds an AI layer on top. Integration takes place during the Im² phase: configuring permissions by matter, indexing documents while respecting existing ACLs, and creating workflows so attorneys can query and draft directly within the matter context. Nothing is duplicated or migrated.
